Join Dr. JoVia Armstrong (percussionist, composer, educator, and Assistant Professor of Music at UVA) for a presentation acknowledging the genius of contemporary Black women in jazz. As musicians and composers, women have helped shape jazz while navigating disparities in opportunities, institutional inequities, and sexism. Historically, women in jazz are seldom mentioned as being major contributors to the genre. While learning about their sonic contributions to today’s jazz and creative music, we will look at how these women serve as agents of social change. There will be a short Q&A following the presentation.
